Uber estimate: price, cost and fare calculator

An Uber trip in British Columbia is priced before you book. The app shows one upfront fare based on distance, expected traffic and current demand, and in Metro Vancouver that fare cannot fall below the regional minimum of $4.43, in force since August 18, 2026. The calculator above gives a planning figure for the same trip. The price in the Uber app is the one that counts.

How Uber builds the upfront fare

Uber’s Canadian pricing page says the upfront fare is estimated from factors such as historical traffic patterns and the distance between pickup and dropoff. It also takes dynamic pricing into account when demand is high. Uber’s rider help page adds that you are charged the exact amount shown when you request the ride.

That fare can change in two cases: you make a significant change during the trip, or the trip takes much longer than estimated because of traffic or other factors. When that happens, the per-rate pricing behind the (i) icon next to the fare applies instead. Uber’s public pages we checked do not publish a Canadian per-kilometre or per-minute rate card, so any figure quoted for a base fare or a rate per kilometre should be treated as unconfirmed.

Uber shows a fare breakdown on the receipt after the trip. Read it there rather than relying on a rate quoted on a website.

The provincial minimum fare

Ride-hailing in BC is regulated by the Passenger Transportation Board. The Board sets a minimum rate that every ride-hail trip must meet, and a fare shown to a passenger cannot fall below it. Coupons or discounts that would push a ride under the minimum are prohibited.

The Board announced on February 18, 2026 that new minimums take effect on August 18, 2026. It sets each one at the higher of two calculations, one based on regional public transit fares and one based on ride-hail fare data submitted by licensees.

The Board’s table has five regions in all, so the rest of the province has its own figures. The minimum is a floor for a single ride, not a typical price. Most real trips cost more than it.

Where Uber works in BC

Uber was approved for the Lower Mainland and Whistler in January 2020 and began operating in Metro Vancouver soon after. In June 2023 it launched in Victoria and Kelowna after the Board approved a licence transfer from another ride-hail company. On May 28, 2025 Uber announced an expansion across the province.

Uber states that rides are only available where drivers sign up and go online, so the province-wide label does not guarantee a car in every town. The Board’s ride-hail licensee list shows Uber authorized in regions 1 to 5, and Lyft in region 1 only. In smaller towns, expect longer waits and sometimes no cars at all, especially late at night. Our directory lists Uber for Metro Vancouver and BC, and a taxi remains the fallback where the app shows nothing nearby. For a side by side look at the two apps, see Lyft vs Uber in BC.

Ride types you will see

Uber’s Canadian ride options page lists these choices, and availability varies by city, so check the app near you.

• UberX: affordable rides, all to yourself.
• Uber Comfort: newer cars with extra legroom.
• UberXL: rides for groups of up to 6.
• Uber Electric: zero-emission rides in electric vehicles.
• Uber WAV: ride assistance for seniors and people with disabilities.
• Uber Black and Uber Black SUV: premium rides in luxury cars, the SUV for up to 6.

Uber does not publish a price ratio between these tiers, so the only reliable comparison is to switch between them in the app before you confirm.

Tipping and payment

Tipping is optional. In the app, you rate the driver after the trip and are then offered a tip, either a preset amount or a custom one. Uber’s help pages say the window to add a tip after a trip is limited, so do not leave it for weeks. Choose your payment method in the app before you confirm.

How our calculator produces an estimate

The tool on this page works from the trip distance and time and the pricing assumptions explained on how we calculate. We are an independent guide, not Uber, and the result is a guide for budgeting, not a quote. Compare it with a taxi estimate from the taxi fare estimator if you are choosing between a cab and the app.

Reading an estimate

• Treat the number as a middle value. Heavy traffic, a detour or added stops can push the real fare up.
• Late evenings, rainy weather and event endings tend to raise demand pricing in busy areas. Run the estimate again at the time you will actually travel.
• Compare the fare for UberX and Comfort in the app, since the gap changes from trip to trip.
• Check the fare breakdown on the receipt if the final amount looks off, and use Uber’s help pages to ask about it.

For trips to the airport or a ferry terminal, add time to your plan as well as money, since pickup rules at those places differ from street pickups.
