How the $77 is worked out
Our figure is an estimate from average rates, not Uber’s own price. The rate card is a $2.50 base fare, $1.15 per km, $0.35 per minute and a $2.00 booking fee. For this trip that means $2.50, plus 45 km at $1.15, plus 60 minutes at $0.35, multiplied by the demand level, with the booking fee added at the end.
Demand moves the total quickly. At 1.2 times normal the fare is about $92, at 1.5 times it is about $115, and at double it reaches about $153. The Uber app shows the real upfront price before you confirm, so treat ours as a guide to what to expect.
If you want more space or a higher grade of car, Comfort is about $96, XL (up to 6 seats) is about $111 and Premier is about $171.
What a taxi meter would show
Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi list the same two numbers: $3.75 on the flag and $2.18 per km. Over this distance the meter comes to roughly $102 with either company. That figure leaves out waiting time and extras, so the final bill can end up higher.
At normal demand the rideshare estimate sits below the meter estimate. Once demand reaches 1.5 times, the rideshare estimate of $115 passes it, so a quick look at both is worth the time if your plans are flexible.
