How much is an Uber from UBC to Kitsilano? At normal demand, a standard rideshare comes to about $18 for the 7 km trip, with a likely range of $16 to $21. The drive takes about 15 minutes.
How the estimate is worked out
We build the figure from average rideshare rates: a base fare of $2.50, $1.15 per km, $0.35 per minute and a $2.00 booking fee. The trip charge is multiplied by a demand factor, and the booking fee is added after that. These are our estimates, not Uber’s own prices. The Uber app shows the real upfront price before you confirm, and that is the number you pay.
On a short trip like this one, demand moves the total more than distance does. When the area is busy (about 1.2 times normal) expect around $21. Very busy (1.5 times) brings it to about $26, and a peak surge at double the normal rate reaches about $34. If the app shows a high figure, waiting a few minutes and checking again is a fair thing to try.
Bigger cars and the taxi alternative
Comfort, which is a step up in vehicle, is about $22 at normal demand. XL seats up to 6 and is about $25, which helps if you are sharing the ride with friends or carrying a lot of gear. Premier is about $38.
For the taxi side, we looked at the published tariffs of Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi. Both list a flag fee of $3.75 and $2.18 per km, so the meter for 7 km would come to about $19. That figure leaves out waiting time and any extras, so treat it as a starting point and not a final quote. At normal demand the two options sit within a dollar of each other. When app prices rise, the meter is the steadier number, because it carries no surge multiplier in this estimate.
Before you book a ride from campus
A university has many buildings and entrances, so give the driver the exact address or the building name instead of a general campus location. Look at the pickup spot the app suggests and walk there before the car arrives, which saves the driver from circling.
At peak hours, allow extra time. A car may take longer to reach you, and the price may be higher than the normal figure above. If you need a wheelchair accessible vehicle, book ahead by phone with a company that lists one. If you have luggage, a bike or a large bag, ask the driver whether it fits before you load it.
Since the ride is only 7 km, a quick look at both the standard and Comfort prices in the app costs you nothing and may show a smaller gap than you expect.
