Check the Uber app for your pickup spot before you leave the building, because the pin it suggests may not be where you are standing. The trip from UBC to Surrey Central is 40 km and takes about 55 minutes. A standard rideshare costs about $70 at normal demand, and the likely range is $62 to $81.
How the $70 is worked out
We build the estimate from average rates: a base fare of $2.50, $1.15 per km, $0.35 per minute and a $2 booking fee. For 40 km and 55 minutes, that adds up to roughly $70 once the booking fee goes on. These are our own estimates from average rates, not Uber’s prices. The Uber app shows the real upfront price before you confirm the ride.
Demand changes the number. When it is busy (x1.2), expect about $83. When it is very busy (x1.5), about $104. At peak (x2), the same trip is about $138. On a ride this long, the gap between a quiet request and a peak one is big enough that waiting a few minutes can pay off.
If you need more room or a nicer car, the app lists other ride types. In Comfort you would pay about $87. XL (up to 6 seats) comes to about $100, and Premier to about $154. XL is the one to look at if you are travelling with several people or a lot of bags.
Meter cost on the Whalley and Royal City tariff
Two taxi companies for this area, Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi, publish the same tariff: a flag fee of $3.75 and $2.18 per km. On 40 km, the meter would come to about $91. Standing time and surcharges are not counted there, so the fare you pay could be higher.
At normal demand, then, the rideshare estimate sits well under the taxi meter. Once demand reaches very busy, the gap shrinks, and at peak the rideshare estimate is above the meter figure.
Planning the trip from campus
Campuses are large, and the spot where a driver can stop is not always the spot nearest your door. Look at the pickup point in the app, and message the driver if you are not sure you are in the right place.
Share the exact address of your destination, since the name of the centre alone may be vague. A trip of almost an hour is long enough that a wrong drop-off point costs you real time.
Leave extra time if you have a class, a shift or an appointment at the other end. Fifty-five minutes is the typical figure, and a longer trip is easy to picture on a busy day. If you have luggage or a bulky bag, ask whether it fits before the driver arrives, and book an accessible vehicle ahead if you need one.
