It takes about 8 minutes to get from UBC to Pacific Spirit Regional Park, a distance of 3 km. At normal demand a standard rideshare comes to roughly $11, and most rides should land between $9 and $13.
Why a short ride still costs what it does
The estimate uses average rideshare rates: a base fare of $2.50, $1.15 per km, $0.35 per minute and a booking fee of $2.00. Add the first three, multiply by the demand factor, then add the booking fee. On a trip this short, the base fare and the booking fee make up a large share of the total, and the distance itself adds little.
There is also a regional minimum fare of $4.43, and a ride can never be priced below it. A 3 km hop is well above that line, so you will not hit it here. These numbers are our estimates and not Uber’s own prices. The Uber app shows the real upfront price, so rely on it when you book.
When demand rises, the total follows. At 1.2 times normal it is about $13, at 1.5 times about $15, and at double the normal rate about $20.
Other options and what to arrange
Larger vehicles and the taxi meter
Comfort is about $13 at normal demand, XL (up to 6 seats) is about $15 and Premier is about $22. If a group of friends is heading out together, the XL price split between everyone can be small per person.
For a taxi, Royal City Taxi and Whalley Taxi each start the meter at $3.75 and then add $2.18 for every km. For 3 km the meter comes to about $10. Time spent waiting and extra charges come on top, so you may pay slightly more. For a hop this short, the taxi and the standard rideshare end up almost level.
Pickup tips for a park trip
A park is a large area, and a general name in the app may not tell the driver where you want to be dropped. Share the exact address or entrance you have in mind, and check the map pin before you confirm the ride.
Plan the way back too. In a quiet, green spot there may be fewer cars online when you want to leave, so open the app a few minutes early to see how many drivers show up nearby. Anyone who needs a wheelchair accessible car should phone and reserve one in advance. At busy times, allow extra minutes even for a short trip.
