The ride from Langara College to Metrotown takes about 15 minutes. It covers 8 km, and a standard rideshare costs about $19 at normal demand, with a likely range of $17 to $22.
How the $19 is worked out
These figures are our own estimates built from average rideshare rates. They are not Uber’s prices, and the Uber app will show the real upfront price before you confirm.
The calculation starts with a base fare of $2.50. Add $1.15 for each kilometre and $0.35 for each minute, and an 8 km, 15 minute trip comes to about $17. A $2 booking fee goes on top, which lands near $19.
Busy conditions stretch the ride portion of the total. When the area is busy, the price rises to about $22. At very busy times it reaches about $27, and at a peak it can double the normal fare to around $36. A class day ending or a rainy afternoon is the kind of moment when you might see a higher number, so a quick check of the app before you leave is worth the few seconds.
If you want more room or a nicer car, the estimates are:
- Comfort: about $23
- XL, which seats up to 6: about $27
- Premier: about $40
Metrotown trip on a taxi meter
Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi both publish the same tariff: a flag fee of $3.75 plus $2.18 per km. Over 8 km, the meter would reach about $21. That figure leaves out waiting time and any extras, so the final fare can run a little higher if you stop on the way or the car sits in slow traffic.
So at normal demand the two options are close, with rideshare slightly cheaper. Once demand climbs, the taxi meter stays steady while the app price moves, and the taxi can come out ahead.
Practical tips for a college pickup
Campuses have more than one entrance, and a driver who guesses wrong costs both of you time. Look at the pin in the app before the car arrives and move it if it is in the wrong spot.
- Share the exact address or building name in the pickup note.
- Leave extra time if you are heading to class or a shift at a set hour.
- Pick XL if you are travelling with a group or a lot of bags.
- Book a wheelchair accessible vehicle ahead of time rather than hoping one is free.
If you split the fare with friends, agree who pays before you get in, since the app charges one account.
