Rideshare and taxi land within a couple of dollars of each other on the Langara College to Richmond Centre run. A standard rideshare is about $19 at normal demand, while a taxi meter would show about $21 on the published tariff. The trip is 8 km and takes around 15 minutes.
The rideshare estimate
Our $19 figure comes from average rates: a $2.50 base fare, $1.15 per km, $0.35 per minute and a $2 booking fee. The likely range is $17 to $22. These are estimates, not Uber’s own prices, and the Uber app shows the true upfront fare when you request the ride.
Distance and time alone give about $17. The booking fee takes it to $19.
The taxi meter
Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi charge $3.75 at flag fall and then $2.18 per km. Multiply that over 8 km and the meter reaches about $21.
Time spent waiting and any extras are billed separately. If you ask the driver to stop somewhere or the car is held up, expect the total to go up.
Taxi has one advantage: its tariff does not rise with demand, as app pricing does.
If demand rises
App prices climb when many people want a ride at once. About $22 is the busy figure, about $27 is very busy and about $36 is a peak. At the high end the taxi is clearly cheaper.
Bigger cars follow the same pattern. Comfort is about $23, XL (up to 6 seats) is about $27 and Premier is about $40 at normal demand.
Finding your car at Langara and the mall
Colleges and shopping centres both have more than one place where a car can wait. Check the pin in the app, and write the exact address or entrance name in the note. That small step saves a driver circling while you wait.
If you have shopping bags or luggage, ask whether they fit before the trip starts. For a wheelchair accessible vehicle, book ahead by phone. Vancouver Taxi lists that service at 604-871-1111.
Plan the return leg too. Prices on the way back can differ from the way out, because demand is checked again each time you request a ride. A fare that looked low in the morning may look different later, so open the app before you commit to a plan that depends on a budget. Splitting the cost with a friend works well on a trip of this length, since the XL fare is only a few dollars above the standard one.
