A standard rideshare from Langara College to Downtown Vancouver costs about $19 at normal demand, and the likely range is $17 to $22. The distance is 8 km and the drive takes about 15 minutes.
Where the number comes from
We worked this out from average rideshare rates, so treat it as an estimate and not as Uber’s own price. The Uber app shows the exact upfront price once you enter both addresses.
That works out from a $2.50 base fare, $1.15 for each km, $0.35 for each minute, and a $2 booking fee. For this trip the distance and time add up to roughly $17 before the booking fee, and the fee brings it to about $19.
When the price moves
Demand is the biggest swing factor. A busy period lifts the fare to about $22, a very busy one to about $27, and a peak to about $36, which is double the usual amount.
Students often travel at the same hours, so the end of a lecture block can push demand up. If your plans are flexible, wait ten minutes and look again.
Larger vehicles cost more at normal demand: Comfort is about $23, XL with up to 6 seats is about $27, and Premier is about $40.
Taxi as the other option
Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi share a published tariff of $3.75 to start and $2.18 for each km. On an 8 km trip, the meter would show about $21.
That estimate does not include waiting time or extras, such as a stop on the way. Rideshare is a couple of dollars lower in calm conditions, while the taxi is more predictable if the app price jumps.
Pickup checks at Langara
Open the app a few minutes early and check where the pickup pin sits. Large campuses can have several places a car could stop, so type the building name or street address into the note for the driver.
If you are carrying a bike, instruments or big bags, ask the driver whether they fit, or choose XL. Riders who need a wheelchair accessible vehicle should book ahead, because those cars are fewer. Vancouver Taxi and Yellow Cab Vancouver list wheelchair accessible service, and you can reach them on 604-871-1111 and 604-681-1111.
Leave a bit of margin if you have an appointment or a ticketed event at the other end. A trip of 15 minutes can easily become longer once you add the wait for the car and the walk to the pickup spot.
