Rideshare and taxi are close on this trip: a standard Uber is about $26 at normal demand, while a taxi meter on a published tariff comes to about $28. The distance from Downtown Vancouver to UBC Campus is 11 km, and the drive takes about 25 minutes. The likely rideshare range is $23 to $30.
Rideshare pricing
Our number is an estimate based on average rideshare rates, not Uber’s own price. It starts with a base fare of $2.50, adds $1.15 for every km and $0.35 for every minute, applies a demand multiplier, and finishes with a $2 booking fee. With 11 km and 25 minutes the result is the $26 above.
The multiplier is the part that changes. At a busy level (1.2 times) the fare is about $31. At very busy (1.5 times) it is about $38, and at peak (2 times) it reaches about $50. Because the drive is on the longer side, a surge adds more dollars here than it would on a short hop. The Uber app displays the true upfront price before you accept it.
Other ride types cost more. Comfort is about $32, XL (up to 6 seats) is about $37, and Premier is about $56. Students moving with several bags or sharing a car with friends may find XL splits well among passengers.
Taxi fare
We could not check a published taxi tariff for this area. As a reference, Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi both charge a flag fee of $3.75 plus $2.18 per km. Over 11 km, that gives a meter figure of about $28. Any wait at the kerb or add on charge comes on top, so you could pay more than that.
For a quote from a local company, phone Vancouver Taxi on 604-871-1111 or Yellow Cab Vancouver on 604-681-1111. Both list wheelchair accessible vehicles and card payment, and it is better to arrange an accessible car before the day you need it.
Planning a campus trip
Universities have large grounds, so the address you type matters. Name the building or entrance you want, and check the pickup pin in the app before you confirm. Rides tend to cost more when classes start or finish, and when events let out, so allow some slack if you have a lecture, exam or flight to meet. If you are carrying luggage, ask the driver whether it fits before loading. If you are heading to the campus with a bike or a large suitcase, say so in the app message, since a standard car may not take it.
