An Uber from Downtown Kelowna to Penticton costs about $98 at normal demand, and the likely range is $88 to $113. The trip is 63 km and takes about 60 minutes.
The arithmetic behind the $98
The $98 is an estimate based on average rates. It is not a price from Uber, and the app will show the real upfront figure when you request the ride. Our inputs are a $2.50 base fare, $1.15 for each km, $0.35 for each minute and a $2.00 booking fee.
The sum is $2.50 plus $72.45 for the 63 km, plus $21.00 for 60 minutes. That gives $95.95, and the booking fee lifts it to about $98.
When demand is high
On a trip of this length, demand matters a lot. At 1.2 times the normal rate the estimate is about $117. At 1.5 times, when it is very busy, it is about $146. At a peak, with the rate doubled, it reaches about $194.
Bigger vehicles cost more again. Comfort is about $122, XL (up to 6 seats) is about $141, and Premier is about $218. XL can be the better value for a group of five or six, because one fare is shared instead of two cars being booked.
Booking a long intercity ride
A trip of an hour or more needs a little more preparation than a ride across town. Before you rely on a rideshare, open the app and check that drivers are showing nearby. This matters most if you are leaving very early or late.
Taxi option
We have no published taxi tariff that we could check for this route, so we cannot give a meter estimate. Phone a taxi company and ask for a quote for the whole trip. Ask if the price is fixed or metered, and whether waiting time and extras are included, since the meter does not cover them.
Whichever you choose, send the driver the exact street address and tell them how many people and bags are coming. Check that the luggage fits before you load it. If you need an accessible vehicle, book it ahead of time, as there are fewer of them than regular cars.
Allow some extra time on arrival if you have a fixed appointment at the other end. A one hour drive can run longer when the car is slow to arrive, and a late start is hard to make up.
