Lougheed to Surrey Central: the fare breakdown
The rate card
We build the estimate from average rideshare rates, which means it is our figure and not an Uber price. The inputs are a base fare of $2.50, $1.15 for each km, $0.35 for each minute, and a $2.00 booking fee. Twelve km and 20 minutes come to about $23 for the ride, and the booking fee makes the total roughly $25.
The Uber app gives the real price upfront, once you enter the pickup and drop off. Rely on that number when it differs from ours.
Demand and vehicle size
A busy period raises the estimate to about $30. At very busy times it climbs to about $37, and at peak, when the multiplier is 2, it reaches about $49. That is nearly double the normal fare for the same 20 minutes in the car, so a short wait is sometimes worth it if you are not in a hurry.
Bigger vehicles cost more from the start. Comfort comes to about $31, XL (up to 6 seats) to about $36, and Premier to about $54.
Taxi cost and getting the pickup right
Tariff-based figure for 12 km
Published tariffs are available for this area. Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi both use a $3.75 flag fee plus $2.18 per km, so 12 km would show about $30 on the meter. Waiting time and extras are not included, and either one can push the final bill higher. Compared with a rideshare at normal demand, the taxi is about $5 more.
The taxi has a point in its favour. Its tariff stays the same when demand jumps, so at peak it can be much cheaper than the app.
Practical advice for a trip between shopping centres
Large centres have more than one place where cars stop. Look at the pin in the app, move it if it is not where you are standing, and send the driver the exact entrance or address.
Plan some slack. The drive is 20 minutes, but the car has to reach you first, and that wait is longer when many people are heading out at once.
If you are carrying a lot, ask the driver whether it all fits. For a wheelchair accessible vehicle, phone ahead and book it instead of requesting one at the last minute.
