A standard rideshare from Aldergrove to Abbotsford costs about $31 at normal demand, and the likely range runs from $27 to $36. That is 15 km, about 25 minutes behind the wheel.
How the $31 is worked out
The estimate rests on average rideshare rates. It is not Uber’s own price. Rates used: $2.50 base fare, then $1.15 per km, $0.35 per minute, and $2.00 for booking. The ride itself comes to about $29, and the fee brings the total to roughly $31.
The multiplier for demand makes a real difference. When it is busy (1.2 times normal) the trip is about $36. When it is very busy (1.5 times) it is about $45, and at a peak (2 times) it is about $59. Open the Uber app for the actual upfront price before you accept it. A gap of a few dollars between our figure and the app is normal, since we work from averages and cannot see live demand or the exact route the driver takes.
On a trip of this length the step from one demand level to the next is only a few dollars, so a quick look at the app tells you most of what you need.
Bigger vehicles are priced higher. Comfort adds up to about $38, XL (up to 6 seats) to about $43, and Premier to about $66.
Taxi meter for the 15 km run
Tariffs for Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi are identical: $3.75 on the flag and $2.18 for each km. For 15 km the meter would come to about $36. That figure leaves out waiting time and extras, so the final amount may be a little more.
Vancouver Taxi (604-871-1111) and Yellow Cab Vancouver (604-681-1111) are two companies you can phone for a quote. Both accept cards and list wheelchair accessible vehicles.
Tips before you ride
Small centres can have fewer drivers online than a big city, so a few habits are worth building in.
- Check the app a little before you need to leave and see whether any cars show up nearby.
- Type in the full address and confirm the pickup pin sits where you will be standing.
- Leave extra room in your schedule at busy hours, since 25 minutes is an average.
- Ask whether bags or extra passengers will fit, and choose XL when in doubt.
If the price looks high, wait a few minutes and look again, or phone a taxi company and compare. Anyone needing an accessible vehicle should book ahead and say so when calling.
