A standard rideshare from YVR Airport to SFU Burnaby costs about $47 at normal demand, and the likely range is $42 to $55. The trip is 25 km and takes around 40 minutes.
The estimate in detail
We built the price from average rates. A base fare of $2.50 is added to $1.15 for each km and $0.35 for each minute. The total is multiplied by a demand level, and a $2 booking fee goes on at the end.
Remember that this is an estimate, not Uber’s own price. The app shows the exact upfront fare when you ask for a car.
Demand has a large effect. A busy period (1.2 times) makes the ride about $56. A very busy period (1.5 times) makes it about $70. At peak (2.0 times) the price is about $93, twice what a normal ride costs.
Larger cars
Comfort is about $59. XL seats up to 6 and costs about $68. Premier is about $104. A group of five with bags will usually find XL easier than splitting into two cars.
What a taxi would cost
Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi charge $3.75 to start the meter and $2.18 for each km driven. Over 25 km the meter should read about $58. That does not include waiting time or extras, so treat it as the minimum you should expect. It is roughly $11 above the normal rideshare price.
Getting picked up and arriving smoothly
Look at the pickup instructions in the app before you reach the curb. Airports are big places, and a driver may be waiting at a different spot from where you expect.
Give the driver the exact destination on the SFU campus, such as a building or residence name, so they do not guess. If you are moving in with a lot of luggage, ask whether it fits before the car arrives.
When you have a deadline, such as a class or a check in time, add a buffer. Busy hours stretch both the wait for a car and the fare. Passengers who use a wheelchair should book an accessible vehicle in advance, because these are harder to find at short notice.
If the app price looks higher than you planned, wait a few minutes and look again, or call a taxi company for comparison. Saving the destination address in your phone before you land also saves typing with tired hands after a long flight.
