Start by opening the Uber app and entering both addresses, because on a trip this short the upfront price is the number that matters. Our estimate for Kelowna Airport (YLW) to UBC Okanagan is about $10 for a standard car, with a likely range of $8 to $12. The distance is 3 km and the drive takes about 5 minutes.
How a $10 fare is made up
We built the estimate from average rideshare rates: a $2.50 base fare, $1.15 per km, $0.35 per minute and a $2 booking fee. Three km and 5 minutes come to about $7.70 before the booking fee is counted, and about $10 once it is added. These are estimates from average rates, not Uber prices.
On very short rides the fee and base fare make up most of the total, so distance matters less than it would on a longer trip. There is also a regional minimum fare of $3.95, though a ride of this length is well above that.
Demand still has an effect. At a busy time, about 1.2 times normal, the price is near $11. At 1.5 times, when it is very busy, expect about $14. At peak demand, double the usual rate, it can reach $17.
Larger vehicles cost a little more: about $12 for Comfort, $13 for XL with up to 6 seats and $19 for Premier. With a gap of only a few dollars, XL can make sense if you have a big group.
Taxi options and practical advice
Taxi quote
We have no published taxi tariff we could check for this area, so we cannot offer a meter estimate. Phone a taxi company and ask what they would charge for 3 km, and ask whether there is a minimum for short trips. Waiting time and extras are not part of any quote you get over the phone.
Airport and campus pickups
An airport and a university campus both have places where cars stop, and the exact spot may not be the one nearest your door. Look at the pickup point in the app, share the full destination address and confirm that your luggage fits. If you need a wheelchair accessible vehicle, arrange it ahead of time.
Because the drive is only 5 minutes, a driver who has trouble finding you can use up a good share of that time. Stay near the pickup point, keep your phone on and watch for the car shown in the app. If your flight has just landed, give yourself a moment to collect your bags before you request the ride.
