The drive from Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal to YVR Airport takes about 35 minutes and covers 31 km. At normal demand a standard rideshare costs about $52, and most trips should land between $47 and $61.
How the rideshare price adds up
These figures are estimates worked out from average rates. They are not prices taken from Uber, and the Uber app shows the real upfront price before you confirm the ride.
The calculation starts with a $2.50 base fare. It adds $1.15 for each kilometre and $0.35 for each minute, applies a demand multiplier, then adds a $2 booking fee. The total can never fall below the regional minimum of $4.43, although on a trip of this length that floor does not come into play.
Demand is what moves the number most. When it is busy (1.2 times normal) expect about $62. At very busy (1.5 times) the price is around $78, and at peak (2 times) it reaches about $103. Prices can change between two checks a few minutes apart, so open the app again before you decide.
If you have a lot of bags or travel as a group, the bigger options cost more. Comfort is about $65, XL (up to 6 seats) is about $75, and Premier is about $115.
Taxi cost and getting the pickup right
What the meter may show
Taxi tariffs are published by Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi, and they match: a $3.75 flag fee and $2.18 per km. Over 31 km that works out to a meter estimate of about $71 with either company. Waiting time and extras are not included, so the final amount on the meter can be higher.
Before you request the ride
A ferry terminal is a place where many passengers leave at the same moment, so give yourself a little room. Open the app before you collect your luggage and look at where it suggests meeting the driver. If the pin is in the wrong spot, move it or message the driver with your exact location.
Heading to an airport adds its own pressure. Work backwards from your check in time, add extra minutes for slow traffic and for a late pickup, and treat the 35 minute drive time as a minimum rather than a promise. At busy hours the trip can run longer than the estimate.
Tell the driver how many suitcases you have, or pick XL if you are unsure they will fit. If you need a wheelchair accessible vehicle, book it ahead by phone instead of hoping one is free when you arrive. Vancouver Taxi (604-871-1111) lists wheelchair accessible cars and airport rides.
Last, compare the two choices on the day. The rideshare estimate is lower at normal demand, but at peak the meter estimate of $71 is below the $103 peak figure.
