Building the estimate
These numbers come from average rates, not from Uber itself. We used a base fare of $2.50, $1.15 per km, $0.35 per minute and a $2 booking fee. The 5 km come to $5.75 and the 12 minutes to $4.20. With the base fare and booking fee, the total is just under $14.45, which rounds to $14.
The Uber app shows the real upfront price when you request the ride, so use ours as a guide and the app as the answer.
On a short trip the booking fee is a big slice of the bill. The regional minimum fare is $4.43, but this ride is well above that.
Demand and bigger cars
When it is busy (x1.2) the price is about $17. Very busy (x1.5) brings it to about $21, and peak (x2) is about $27. Because the trip is short, it can be worth waiting a few minutes for demand to settle rather than paying the higher rate.
Comfort costs about $18 and XL, which seats up to 6, is about $20. Premier is about $30. XL is only $6 above the standard price here, so it is an easy upgrade for a group or a trip with a lot of bags.
Taxi and practical tips
Both Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi charge $3.75 to start the meter and $2.18 for every km after that. For 5 km the meter would come to about $15, a dollar more than the rideshare estimate at normal demand. The meter figure leaves out any waiting time and extras.
On a hop like this, the main risk is time lost at pickup, not money. Check the pin in the app, and if you are being collected from a place with more than one entrance, tell the driver which one is yours. Send the exact address for the drop off too.
If you are travelling with a stroller, a bike or a wheelchair, say so before the driver arrives. Wheelchair users should phone Vancouver Taxi or Yellow Cab Vancouver to arrange an accessible vehicle in advance, since a short trip is easy to lose to a long wait.
Paying by card works in the app, and the same two companies can tell you whether their cars accept cards on board.
