On a 20 km trip from Ladner to Surrey Central, a rideshare is cheaper than a taxi: about $38 at normal demand against roughly $47 on the meter. The drive takes about 30 minutes, and the likely rideshare range is $34 to $44.
Rideshare price and how it moves
Our rideshare figure is an estimate from average rates. It is not Uber’s price, and the Uber app gives the real upfront amount before you accept it.
Our rate card is a base fare of $2.50, $1.15 per km, $0.35 per minute and a booking fee of $2. Twenty kilometres adds $23 and 30 minutes adds $10.50, so with the base fare the subtotal is $36. The booking fee takes it to $38.
Demand multiplies the $36 part only. At 1.2 (busy) the estimate is about $45, at 1.5 (very busy) about $56, and at 2x (peak) about $74. On a trip this long the difference between a quiet hour and a peak one can pay for a second meal out, so it is worth checking the app once or twice before you commit.
If you need more room, Comfort is about $47, XL (up to 6 seats) is about $54 and Premier is about $83. Splitting an XL between several people can come in lower per head than separate cars.
Taxi and planning the trip
What the meter would show
Both Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi list a published tariff: $3.75 flag fee and $2.18 for each km. Over 20 km the meter comes to about $47. Waiting time and extras are not included, and a longer trip leaves more room for those to add up. The upside of a meter is that it does not react to demand, so the figure stays about the same at any hour.
Practical points for a longer ride
A 30 minute trip is long enough that a few details matter. Confirm the pickup spot in the app and send the full address, including a unit or entrance if you have one. Tell the driver about luggage or a child seat before they arrive, not when they pull up.
If you have to be somewhere at a set time, leave early. Rides cost more and cars take longer to reach you when many people are booking at once, and a slow pickup on a 20 km trip eats into your margin. Riders who need a wheelchair accessible vehicle should phone ahead and book, because availability on the day is limited.
Pay attention to the final screen before you tap request. It shows the ride type, the upfront price and the estimated arrival, and those three things tell you more than any table can.
