Plan on about 25 minutes for the 18 km ride from Surrey Central to Langley City. At normal demand a standard rideshare comes to about $34, and the likely range runs from $30 to $40.
What the ride costs and how we got there
Our numbers are estimates built from average rideshare rates, not Uber’s own prices. When you type both addresses into the Uber app, it shows the actual upfront fare, and that is the number you will pay.
The working is simple. Start with a base fare of $2.50, add $1.15 for each of the 18 km and $0.35 for each of the 25 minutes, and you reach $31.95. Add the $2 booking fee and the total is about $34. Because the trip is well above the regional minimum fare of $4.43, the minimum does not come into it.
Demand raises the figure in steps. A busy period (1.2 times) puts the estimate near $40. Very busy (1.5 times) takes it to $50, and peak pricing (2x) to $66. Roughly doubling the base price is possible, so a quick look at the app before you leave is worthwhile.
Comparing your options
Larger rideshare vehicles
At normal demand, Comfort is about $42 and XL (up to 6 seats) is about $48. Premier is about $74. XL is the one to price up if you are sharing the ride with several people, since the gap from a standard car is $14 and the fare splits across the group.
Taxi and booking tips
The published tariff at Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi is a $3.75 flag fee followed by $2.18 per km. Over 18 km the meter works out to about $43. Waiting time and extras are not counted in that figure, so treat it as a base. The taxi estimate sits above the rideshare price at normal demand, yet it is lower than the very busy and peak rideshare numbers.
For any trip of this length, send the driver your exact address as well as the pin, because a spot on the map does not always show which entrance you mean. Leave a little spare time if you need to arrive by a set hour. If you need a vehicle that takes a wheelchair, phone a taxi company ahead of time and ask what they can arrange, instead of waiting for the app to offer one.
Bags are worth a mention when you book. Tell the driver how many you have so they can say whether a standard car will do.
