Taxi and rideshare come out almost level on the run from Guildford to Surrey Central: the meter is about $12, and a standard Uber is about $13 at normal demand. The trip is 4 km and takes around 10 minutes, and the likely rideshare range is $11 to $15.
Taxi meter for the 4 km run
For taxis, Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi quote a flag fee of $3.75 plus $2.18 on each km. For 4 km that puts the meter at about $12. Waiting time and extras are not included, so a stop on the way would add to it.
The rideshare side
Our estimate uses average rates of $2.50 base fare, $1.15 per km, $0.35 per minute and a $2 booking fee. Distance adds $4.60, time adds $3.50, and the base fare brings the subtotal to $10.60. The booking fee takes it to about $12.60, which we round to $13.
The regional minimum fare is $4.43, so it has no effect on a trip this long.
These figures are estimates from average rates and not Uber’s own prices. The real upfront price appears in the app once you enter both places.
When demand rises
A busy 1.2 times multiplier gives about $15. At a very busy 1.5 times the price is about $18, and a 2 times peak is about $23. Once that happens the rideshare is clearly the more expensive choice, and the taxi meter becomes the better deal.
For a larger vehicle at normal demand, Comfort is about $15, XL (up to 6 seats) is about $17 and Premier is about $26.
Pickup details at the shopping centres
Shopping centres are big sites, so name the entrance or address where you are waiting, and watch the pickup pin in the app. If you are carrying several bags, ask the driver whether they fit before loading.
A wheelchair accessible vehicle is best booked ahead by phone. When many people are requesting rides, allow a few extra minutes for the car to arrive.
The likely rideshare range of $11 to $15 shows how much the same trip can move between requests. Distance and time stay at 4 km and 10 minutes, so the change comes from how many drivers are free. If you are not in a hurry, opening the app twice a few minutes apart tells you whether the price is steady or still climbing, and you can phone a taxi company for a quote if you prefer a second number.
