Plan on about 15 minutes for the 8 km ride from Downtown Vancouver to Jericho Beach. A standard rideshare is about $19 at normal demand, and the likely range runs from $17 to $22.
Where the price comes from
Our number is built from average rideshare rates, so it is an estimate and not an Uber quote. The rate card is a $2.50 base fare, $1.15 for each km, $0.35 for each minute and a $2 booking fee. Eight km adds $9.20, and 15 minutes adds $5.25. With the base fare that is about $17, and the booking fee lifts it to roughly $19.
Only the Uber app can show the real upfront price. Open it with your pickup and drop-off entered and compare the number against ours.
Demand moves the price. In busy periods the estimate is about $22. When it is very busy it rises to about $27, and at peak demand it reaches $36. A trip that costs $19 on a quiet day can cost almost twice that when everyone is booking at once, so check the app before you commit if timing is loose.
For more room, Comfort is about $23 on this route. XL, with up to 6 seats, is about $27, and Premier is about $40. If you are carrying folding chairs, towels or a stroller, ask yourself whether it all fits in a standard car before you request one.
Jericho Beach by taxi meter
The tariff at Whalley Taxi matches the one at Royal City Taxi: $3.75 on starting the meter and $2.18 for every km after. Over 8 km the meter would show about $21. That figure leaves out waiting time and extras, so the real fare may be a little higher.
Taxi and rideshare prices land close together on a short trip like this one, so the choice often comes down to how you want to book. Vancouver Taxi (604-871-1111) and Yellow Cab Vancouver (604-681-1111) take phone calls and list app booking and cards.
Meeting your driver at a beach
Beach destinations have many entrances, and a driver who is guessing will lose time. Share the exact address or a dropped pin and look at the suggested pickup point in the app before you confirm. If you are heading back downtown later, leave a few extra minutes, because a car requested at a busy moment can take longer to arrive. Anyone who needs a wheelchair accessible vehicle should phone ahead rather than hope one is free.
