Plan on about 20 minutes in the car from Capilano University to Downtown Vancouver, a distance of 12 km. A standard rideshare for the trip is about $25 at normal demand, and the likely range is $22 to $30.
Those prices are estimates from average rates, not Uber’s own figures, so confirm against the upfront price shown in the app.
Reading the price
For the maths we assumed a $2.50 base fare, with $1.15 added per km, $0.35 per minute and a $2 booking fee. Twelve kilometres is $13.80 and twenty minutes is $7.00. Add the base fare and you have $23.30, then the booking fee takes the total to about $25.
As demand rises, the multiplier is applied to the ride portion. At 1.2 the estimate is about $30, at 1.5 it is about $37, and at the peak level of 2 it is about $49. The distance and time stay the same, so only the price moves.
If you can choose when to leave, compare the app’s quote at a few moments before you commit. Waiting a little can sometimes bring a peak price back toward the normal one, though nothing guarantees it. The Uber app will always show the final upfront number before you confirm.
Larger and higher grade cars
At normal demand Comfort is about $31, XL (up to 6 seats) is about $36 and Premier is about $54. Splitting an XL between several students can be cheaper per person than ordering two cars.
Taxi and pickup planning
What a meter would show
Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi both show a $3.75 starting charge and $2.18 for every km. For 12 km the meter would reach about $30. Waiting time and extras sit on top of that.
Starting from a campus
If you are leaving a university, look at the pickup pin before you request the car and move it if it is off. Put the building name or street address in a message so the driver does not guess. Plan for the full 20 minutes plus some margin when you have a train, a shift or an appointment waiting at the other end.
Bags, instruments and sports gear are worth a quick question to the driver first. If you need a vehicle with wheelchair access, phone and book it ahead, since it is not something to count on finding at short notice. Give the dispatcher your pickup address and time when you call.
