The drive from Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal to Coquitlam Centre is 50 km, and it takes about 60 minutes. A standard rideshare for that trip comes to about $83 at normal demand, with a likely range of $74 to $96.
Cost of the 50 km ride
These figures are estimates worked out from average rideshare rates, not prices taken from Uber. The calculation uses a base fare of $2.50, $1.15 per km, $0.35 per minute and a $2 booking fee. For this trip that is $2.50 plus $57.50 for distance plus $21 for time, which makes $81. The booking fee takes it to $83.
Demand changes the number. When it is busy (1.2 times the usual fare) expect about $99. At very busy times (1.5 times) the price climbs to about $124, and at a peak (double) it reaches around $164. The Uber app shows the real upfront price before you confirm, so use our figure as a guide for budgeting and let the app have the final word.
If you want a bigger or nicer car, Comfort is about $103, XL (up to 6 seats) is about $119 and Premier is about $184. XL is worth a look when a family comes off the ferry with several bags and a rideshare sedan would be tight.
Taxi, and how to plan the pickup
Meter estimate over 50 km
We found a published tariff for Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi: a flag fee of $3.75 and $2.18 per km. Over 50 km the meter would come to roughly $113. Waiting time and extras are not included, so the fare you actually pay can run higher. A taxi has no demand multiplier, but at normal demand the rideshare estimate still sits well under that meter figure.
Before you request the car
Ferry terminals tend to fill with riders when a sailing arrives, and many of them ask for a car at the same moment. Open the app and read the pickup spot it suggests instead of guessing where to stand. Send the driver your exact destination address so there is no confusion about which entrance you want.
Ask whether your luggage fits before you get in, particularly if you are carrying more than a couple of suitcases. If anyone in your group needs a wheelchair accessible vehicle, book one ahead of time because those cars are fewer. A trip of 60 minutes also deserves a little padding in your plans, so do not schedule something tight right after you arrive.
