Twenty minutes is the usual drive time from Downtown Vancouver to Lonsdale Quay, over 10 km. A standard rideshare costs about $23 at normal demand, and the likely range is $20 to $27. That is a short trip, and the numbers below show how little it takes for the price to move.
Price and demand
How we get $23
We work from average rates: $2.50 base fare, $1.15 per km, $0.35 per minute and a $2.00 booking fee. Ten kilometres adds $11.50 and 20 minutes adds $7.00. With the base fare the subtotal is $21.00, and the booking fee takes it to about $23. This is an estimate, not Uber’s own price, and the app shows the real upfront price.
A regional minimum fare of $4.43 exists, but a trip of this length is far above it, so it does not affect the figure.
What busy periods do
When demand is busy (about 1.2 times normal) the trip is about $27. Very busy (1.5 times) makes it about $34, and a peak (2 times) can reach about $44. On a short ride the booking fee is a larger share of the total, which is why the price is less sensitive than on long trips but can still nearly double.
Bigger vehicles at normal demand are Comfort at about $28, XL (up to 6 seats) at about $32 and Premier at about $49. For a short hop with a group, XL is often better value than splitting two standard cars.
Taxi and trip planning
The meter estimate
Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi bill $3.75 at flagdown plus $2.18 per km. Across 10 km, the meter estimate is about $26 for either company. That total leaves out waiting and extras. Standard rideshare is about $3 cheaper at normal demand, so for a short trip the two options are close.
Tips for a short ride
Quay is part of the destination name, so you are likely heading to a waterfront spot, but the app only needs a clear address. Type the full destination and confirm the pickup point before the car arrives. A few minutes of waiting costs more in a 20 minute trip than it would in a long one, so be ready outside.
If you need a wheelchair accessible vehicle, phone a taxi company ahead. Check the app for demand before you leave, and consider waiting a little if the price is high.
