The distance from Downtown Victoria to UVic is 8 km, and the drive takes about 15 minutes. A standard rideshare costs about $19 at normal demand, with a likely range of $17 to $22.
How we get to $19
The figure is an estimate from average rates, not Uber’s own price.
We use a base fare of $2.50, then $1.15 for every kilometre and $0.35 for every minute. A $2 booking fee goes on top. Eight kilometres adds $9.20 and fifteen minutes adds $5.25, so the total is close to $19.
The Uber app shows the true upfront price when you request the ride.
Surge steps on the way to UVic
Busy periods push prices up in steps. At 1.2 times normal you would see about $22. At 1.5 times it is about $27, and at a peak surge of double the rate it is about $36.
A short trip like this feels a surge strongly, because the base fare and booking fee are a larger share of the total. If the price looks steep, a few minutes of waiting can bring it down.
Bigger vehicles cost more. Comfort is about $23, XL (up to six seats) is about $27, and Premier is about $40.
Taxi options
We could not find a published taxi tariff for this area, so there is no meter estimate here. A phone call will get you a quote. The numbers to try are 250-886-6066 for Uptown Taxi, 250-383-7111 for Victoria Taxi and 250-382-2222 for BlueBird Cabs.
BlueBird lists wheelchair accessible vehicles, card payments and app booking.
Getting there smoothly
A university campus is large, so tell the driver the exact building or entrance you need and put it in the app as well. If you are carrying bags or a laptop case and have a class or an appointment, ask for the car a little earlier than you think you need to.
Students and visitors often share a ride. At $19 for a standard car, splitting it between two people is a common way to cut the cost, and XL is there if four or more of you are going together.
If you need an accessible vehicle, do not leave it to the app. Phone a company ahead of time, say what you need and when, and ask for a price at the same moment. A quote given by phone is easy to compare with the figure the Uber app shows, and it gives you something firm to work from when demand is high and the app price jumps.
