Before you book, open the Uber app and compare its upfront price with the $70 we estimate for a standard ride from YVR Airport to Cloverdale. The trip is 40 km and takes about 55 minutes, and the likely range at normal demand is $62 to $81.
Where our estimate comes from
We work from average rates, so these figures are estimates and not Uber’s own prices. The app’s number is the one that counts.
The rate card is a base fare of $2.50, $1.15 per kilometre, $0.35 per minute and a $2.00 booking fee. Forty kilometres comes to $46.00, and fifty five minutes comes to $19.25. Add the base fare for a subtotal of $67.75, then the booking fee, and you reach about $70.
When it is busy (1.2 times) expect about $83. At very busy (1.5 times) the price is about $104, and at a peak (2 times) it is about $138.
Comfort is about $87, XL (up to 6 seats) is about $100, and Premier is about $154. For a long ride with several passengers, the XL fare divided between everyone can be a sensible choice.
If you prefer a taxi
Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi publish a $3.75 flag fee and $2.18 per kilometre. On 40 km the meter estimate is about $91, and waiting time and extras are not included. That is about $21 more than a standard rideshare at normal demand.
A taxi may still suit you if you want to talk to someone first. Phone Vancouver Taxi on 604-871-1111 or Yellow Cab Vancouver on 604-681-1111 to ask for a quote, and request a wheelchair accessible vehicle in advance if you need one.
Fifty five minutes in a car is long enough that the cost of a surge is easy to feel. At the peak level the fare is about $68 higher than at normal demand, so if your plans are flexible, checking the app a little later can save real money.
Practical tips for a long airport ride
After a flight, give yourself a few extra minutes at pickup, because finding the right meeting spot can take longer than you expect. A few habits make a long ride easier.
- Check the app price twice if the first one looks high.
- Pick XL when you have bulky luggage or more than four people.
- Confirm the destination address before the driver sets off.
- Allow extra time if you have an appointment at the other end.
