Open the Uber app and look at the upfront price before anything else, because the estimate here is only a guide. We put a rideshare from Downtown Prince George to Pine Centre Mall at about $14 at normal demand. The trip is 5 km and takes about 10 minutes, and the likely range is $12 to $16.
Where the $14 comes from
The estimate uses average rideshare rates in Canadian dollars: $2.50 base fare, $1.15 for each kilometre, $0.35 for each minute and a $2 booking fee. Five kilometres adds $5.75 and ten minutes adds $3.50. With the base fare that makes $11.75, and the booking fee brings it to roughly $14.
These figures are estimates from average rates, not Uber prices. The app shows the real upfront price for your pickup time.
When demand climbs, so does the fare. Busy periods push the ride to about $16, very busy periods to about $20, and a peak can reach $26. On a trip this short the multiplier is easy to notice, since a few extra dollars is a large share of a small fare.
Comfort costs about $17, XL (up to 6 seats) about $19 and Premier about $28. XL is the one to pick if you are heading out with a group or expect to come back with large shopping bags.
Taxi fares for this trip
There is no published taxi tariff we could check for this area, so we cannot work out a meter total. A phone call to a local taxi company will get you a real figure. Ask if the fare is metered, whether a short trip has a minimum charge, and whether waiting while you shop would be billed. Meter estimates leave out waiting time and extras in any case.
Practical tips for a shopping trip
- Share the exact address or entrance you want, since a mall can be large and the pin may land far from where you are standing.
- Ask the driver by message whether bags or a stroller will fit before they arrive.
- Order the ride home from the app as you finish, not when you reach the exit, so you spend less time waiting.
- Check that the pickup pin sits at a spot a car can actually reach.
If you need a wheelchair accessible vehicle, arrange it by phone ahead of time, because the app may not offer one on the day. In a smaller centre it is also worth looking at how many drivers appear online before you decide to wait for a ride.
