Check the app for your pickup spot before you leave the arrivals area, then look at the price: a standard rideshare from YVR Airport to Lougheed Town Centre is about $47 at normal demand. The likely range is $42 to $55 for the 25 km trip, which takes about 40 minutes.
Where the $47 comes from
We build the estimate from average rideshare rates. Those are a $2.50 base fare, $1.15 per km, $0.35 per minute and a $2 booking fee. Distance and time are added together, multiplied by the demand level, and then the booking fee goes on top.
Busy periods raise the total. At 1.2 times the normal rate you would see about $56. At 1.5 times (very busy) it is about $70, and at a peak of 2 times it reaches about $93. All of this is our estimate and not Uber’s own pricing, so go by the upfront price in the Uber app. The app also lets you compare ride types side by side before you pay, which is the quickest way to see what a larger car adds.
Bigger vehicles cost more. Comfort is about $59, XL (up to 6 seats) about $68 and Premier about $104. XL is worth a look when you are travelling with a group or carrying extra bags.
Taxi cost and what to do before the ride
Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi publish a $3.75 flag fee and $2.18 per km. Over 25 km, the meter estimate is about $58. Waiting time and extras are not included, so the final amount may be higher. At normal demand the taxi is about $11 more than the rideshare estimate, but it is a little above a busy rideshare fare and below the very busy one.
Once you have settled on a ride, share the exact address with the driver instead of a general area name. Ask whether your luggage fits, and say how many people are travelling. If you need a wheelchair accessible vehicle, book one ahead by phone because a last minute request is harder to fill.
Give yourself a little extra time at busy hours. The 40 minute figure is an average, and the per minute part of the fare means a slow trip costs more than a smooth one. Likewise, a name like Lougheed Town Centre can cover a wide area, so confirm the spot on the map in the app and tell the driver if you want to be dropped at a particular side.
