Rideshare is the cheaper way to get from Downtown Vancouver to Langley on paper: about $83 for a standard car against about $113 on a taxi meter. The trip is 50 km and takes around 60 minutes.
Rideshare price and how we estimate it
At normal demand a standard rideshare is about $83, and the likely range runs from $74 to $96. The estimate uses average rates: $2.50 base fare, $1.15 per km, $0.35 per minute and a $2 booking fee. Fifty kilometres adds $57.50, and sixty minutes adds $21.
All of this is worked out from average rates, so it is a guide and not an Uber quote. Uber shows the real upfront price in its app, so check it before you accept.
Busy periods push the total up. At 1.2 times the normal rate it is about $99. At 1.5 times it is about $124, and at double it is about $164. A driver search that takes a little longer than usual often means demand is high.
Bigger cars cost more. Comfort is about $103, XL with up to six seats is about $119, and Premier is about $184.
Because the likely range is fairly tight, the $83 figure is a reasonable number for budgeting. Only a demand surge should move you far from it, and the app will tell you when one applies to your request.
The taxi side of the comparison
Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi publish an identical tariff, a $3.75 flag fee plus $2.18 per km. Over 50 km that gives a meter estimate of about $113. The meter number has no allowance for waiting or extra charges.
The gap is about $30 against the standard rideshare estimate, and it narrows if you pick Comfort. A taxi can still make sense if you prefer to phone for a car or you want to pay at the end of the ride in the usual way.
Tips for a one hour ride
Pick the pickup point carefully in the app and send the driver your exact destination address. If you have a large suitcase, a car seat or a mobility aid, tell the driver or the dispatcher before the car sets off.
Riders who need a wheelchair accessible vehicle should book ahead rather than hoping one is nearby. For appointments or meetings at the other end, add extra time, since an hour is only an average and busy hours can slow things down.
Splitting the fare with a friend is simple with an XL, and at about $119 shared between two people it can cost less per head than a single standard car with one rider.
