Before you walk anywhere with your bags, check the pickup spot shown in the Uber app for YVR Airport. Then look at the fare: a standard ride to BC Children’s Hospital is about $23 at normal demand, with a likely range of $20 to $27. The trip is 10 km and takes about 20 minutes.
These are our estimates from average rates. They are not Uber’s own prices, and the app shows the real upfront price once you enter the destination.
How the fare is built
The estimate uses a base fare of $2.50, $1.15 per km and $0.35 per minute. Ten km adds $11.50 and 20 minutes adds $7, so the metered part is $21. A $2 booking fee brings the total to about $23.
When demand rises, the metered part is multiplied. A busy period (x1.2) puts the fare near $27. Very busy (x1.5) is about $34, and a peak surge (x2) is about $44.
Comfort is about $28 for this trip, XL with up to 6 seats is about $32, and Premier is about $49.
Planning the trip
Taxi or rideshare
Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi share a tariff of $3.75 for the flag and $2.18 per km. For 10 km the meter would come to about $26. That figure has no allowance for waiting or extras.
At normal demand the rideshare estimate is a few dollars lower than the meter. Once the app moves to very busy or peak, the taxi can be the cheaper choice, so compare before you commit.
Practical steps for a hospital trip
Share the exact address or entrance with your driver so they know where to stop. If a child or another passenger has mobility needs, book an accessible vehicle ahead instead of relying on one being close by.
Ask the driver whether your luggage fits before loading. Allow extra time if your appointment is during a busy period, and look at the price again just before you confirm, since it can change from one minute to the next.
Saving a screenshot of the upfront price is a small habit worth having. If the final charge differs, you have the figure you agreed to in front of you, and you can raise it with the company through the app. Families travelling with a child may also want to ask about seating before the car arrives, since the driver can tell you what is on board.
