A rideshare from Lynn Valley to Downtown Vancouver is cheaper than a taxi on paper: about $31 at normal demand against a meter of about $36. Lynn Valley to Downtown Vancouver covers 15 km and takes about 25 minutes by car.
The rideshare price
The likely range for a standard ride is $27 to $36. Those numbers are our estimates from average rates, not Uber’s own prices.
Inputs: $2.50 base fare, $1.15 for each km, $0.35 for each minute, $2 booking fee. For 15 km and 25 minutes that adds up to about $30.50, which we round to $31.
Surge pricing between Lynn Valley and Downtown
A busy period at a 1.2 multiplier makes the ride about $36. Very busy, at 1.5, it is about $45. At peak demand, double the normal rate, it is about $59.
The Uber app shows the exact upfront price before you book. If it is well above $31, waiting a few minutes and checking again is sometimes enough to see it drop.
For more space, Comfort is about $38, XL (up to 6 seats) about $43 and Premier about $66.
Metered fare on the published tariff
Whalley Taxi and Royal City Taxi publish identical tariffs: a flag fee of $3.75 and $2.18 for every km. At 15 km that is a meter of about $36. It does not include waiting time or extras, so the final fare can be higher.
Vancouver Taxi (604-871-1111) and Yellow Cab Vancouver (604-681-1111) both list wheelchair accessible vehicles. Call ahead if you need one.
Booking tips
Give the driver your exact address, and check that the pin in the app is on the right side of the street.
Leave a cushion on weekday mornings and late afternoons, when roads are usually slower and prices climb.
If you have luggage, say so when you book or message the driver. A standard car may be a tight fit for more than a couple of bags.
On a trip of 15 km, the difference between the two options is about $5, so it is worth a quick check of both. Open the app for the rideshare figure, then phone one of the companies above for a taxi estimate.
Remember that the taxi figure is the meter on the published tariff and nothing more. A tip, a long wait at the kerb or an extra stop will each add to it, while the Uber price is fixed once you accept it.
If you are travelling with a group of five or six, the XL price of $43 is still below a taxi meter of $36 per car for two cars, so it can be the cheaper way to move everyone together.
