The simplest way from downtown Victoria to Victoria General Hospital is a short bus ride or a taxi, and the exact bus to take is best confirmed in the BC Transit trip planner before you leave.
Taking the bus from downtown
BC Transit runs the Victoria regional system, which covers more than 90 routes, and the website has a trip planner, schedules and maps. Enter your downtown stop as the start and Victoria General Hospital as the destination. The planner will show which routes serve the hospital, where to board, how long the ride takes and when the next bus leaves.
Fares can be paid by contactless card or phone, and BC Transit sells a DayPASS and a 30 Day Pass. If you are making several trips to the hospital, for appointments over a few days, a pass is worth looking at. The Umo app and the Transit app show live bus positions.
Service alerts matter more than usual right now. BC Transit has posted notices about delayed or cancelled trips during labour action, so look at the alerts page on the day you travel, especially if you have a fixed appointment time.
By car or taxi to the hospital
Driving is the more predictable choice when a bus alert is active or when you are unwell, carrying equipment or travelling with children. Set your map app to Victoria General Hospital and follow it. Traffic on the roads out of downtown thickens at the morning and late afternoon peaks, so leave a buffer for appointments.
Hospital parking has its own rules and fees, and these change. Check the Island Health website for the current parking information for this site before you go, and allow time to find a space and walk to the entrance.
A local taxi saves the parking question altogether. You can book one through Victoria taxi, and the taxi fare estimator gives a rough idea of the cost before you commit.
Before you head out
Bring your appointment letter or referral, your health card and a list of any medications. Ask the department you are visiting which entrance to use, since a large hospital has several. If you arrive by bus, give yourself extra minutes for the walk from the stop to the right door.
When you are travelling to Victoria from elsewhere, plan the ferry or flight leg first, then use the trip planner for the last stretch into town.
