How to get from Downtown Vancouver to Surrey?

2 min read Updated

The SkyTrain Expo Line is the easiest way from downtown Vancouver to Surrey. Board at Waterfront Station or another downtown station and ride toward King George. Waterfront to King George takes about 39 minutes.

Expo Line to King George or Surrey Central

The Expo Line splits at Columbia Station. One branch goes through New Westminster, and the other crosses the Fraser River to King George Station in Surrey. Watch the sign on the front of the train and take the one marked King George. Surrey Central is one of the stops on the way.

Surrey is large, so your final stop matters. Train stations suit the city centre area. For neighbourhoods away from the line, a TransLink bus from a Surrey station may finish the trip. The TransLink trip planner will show which bus fits your address.

Pay with a Compass Card or tap a contactless card. The fare depends on zones and on the day, so check TransLink for the current price. Service notices are posted there too, which is useful because stations occasionally close for work.

Leave a little extra time for the walk at each end. Downtown stations can be a few blocks from where you started, and Surrey stations may be a bus ride from your destination.

Driving to Surrey

Travel time by road swings widely with traffic, and rush hours slow it. Look at a live traffic map before you set off. Parking costs and rules in Surrey vary by site, so check the destination’s own page.

Taking a taxi

A taxi is a good fit for a group, heavy bags or a late arrival. Surrey is a long way from downtown, so the fare is higher than for a short city ride. Use the taxi fare estimator to see a rough figure, and compare it with a rideshare in the Uber calculator. Bookings from the city are handled through the Vancouver taxi page.
