Brechin Hill is a short hop from downtown Nanaimo, up Brechin Road just north of the Old City Quarter. A taxi or a few minutes in the car is the easiest way, and a navigation app will sort out the final streets.
Where Brechin Hill is
Brechin Hill is one of the oldest parts of Nanaimo, known for character homes and wide views over the Strait of Georgia and Newcastle Island. It lies slightly west of Departure Bay and close to the Harbourfront Walkway, the marinas and the seaplane terminal. That position explains why people often arrive here straight from the Departure Bay ferry or from a waterfront stroll.
Driving up Brechin Road
Highway 19A meets the Trans Canada Highway at the entrance to the Departure Bay ferry terminal and runs up Brechin Road to Terminal Avenue. So from downtown you head north along the waterfront side of town and take Brechin Road uphill into the neighbourhood. Because the neighbourhood is a grid of residential streets rather than a single attraction, enter the actual address or cross street you want. Street parking rules vary from block to block, so read the signs where you stop.
Using BC Transit
Several routes pass through the downtown exchange, and Route 20 and 20A connect downtown with the Departure Bay ferry terminal, which is close to the foot of Brechin Road. Open the BC Transit trip planner, enter your start point and the Brechin Road stop nearest your destination, and it will show the current route and times. Do the same for the ride back, especially in the evening.
The walk is steep in places, since the neighbourhood sits on a hill above the harbour. Anyone carrying luggage will find it easier to ride than climb.
When a cab makes sense
