How to get from Port Renfrew to Botanical Beach?

3 min read Updated

Botanical Beach sits at the northern end of Juan de Fuca Provincial Park, close to Port Renfrew, and the easiest way to reach it is to drive the gravel road to the trailhead parking and walk in from there. Plan the visit around the tide, because that decides whether the beach is worth the trip.

The road from Port Renfrew to the trailhead

Port Renfrew is reached from Victoria on Highway 14. From the village, the road to Botanical Beach is a gravel road that has served the park since before it was established. BC Parks describes a parking area beside the road to Botanical Beach, and the trails start there. The BC Parks page gives no fee or capacity figures for the lot, so check the park’s page for current conditions before you head out.

The route is short enough that a fare check is easy. The taxi fare estimator gives a rough idea of cost, though few taxis work this far out, so arrange a pickup in advance if you plan to ride one.

Timing the tide pools

Low tide is the reason people come. BC Parks says a tide of 1.2 metres or less is best for viewing the pools. Tide tables are posted at the trailheads and the Fisheries and Oceans Canada table for Port Renfrew is online, so look it up the night before and arrive an hour or so ahead of the low.

The rocky shelf is slippery, and the water returns faster than most visitors expect. Watch the waves, keep off wet rock, and head back up when the tide turns.

Walking on the Botanical Loop

From the parking area you walk down to the shore. BC Parks calls the Botanical Loop Trail, which links Botanical Beach with Botany Bay, an easy to moderate trail suited to a light walk. Wear shoes with grip, since forest trails here stay damp, and bring water.

The Mill Bay Trail also starts from a parking area beside the road to the beach, which gives a second option if you want a longer outing along the coast.

Looking after the shoreline

The tide pools are protected. Visitors must not touch, remove, collect or disturb marine life or the pools it lives in, and provincial fines start at $288. Pick up your litter and stay on the marked paths.

If you are coming from Metro Vancouver, allow for a BC Ferries crossing and a long drive on Highway 14 before you reach Port Renfrew. Check the BC Ferries sailing schedule and the DriveBC road report on the day you travel.
