How to get from Parksville to Top Bridge Regional Trail?

2 min read Updated

The Top Bridge Regional Trail is inside Parksville, so the easiest way to reach it is a short drive to one of its three parking lots. The trail runs 4 kilometres from Rathtrevor Beach Park to the Englishman River canyon, where the original crossing stood.

The three parking lots

The Regional District of Nanaimo lists three lots for the trail: Allsbrook Road, Chattell Road and Tuan Road. The Allsbrook Road lot is at 175 Allsbrook Road in Parksville, which is a handy address to type into a map app. Choose the lot closest to the stretch you want to walk, since the trail is long enough that the starting point changes the outing.

Gate hours matter. From March 2 to October 31 the gates are open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., and from November 1 to March 1 they are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. A vehicle left inside after closing is locked in until 7 a.m. the next day, so set a time on your phone.

Trail route and recent changes

The regional district notes that the route has been rerouted through Parksville, and that the Industrial Way parking area was resurfaced for drainage, with updated signs planned. If a sign on the ground disagrees with an older map, trust the sign and check the district’s trail page for the latest.

The trail starts at the ocean at Rathtrevor Beach Park and follows the river inland. Wear shoes with grip, because canyon paths stay damp after rain.

Without a car

Parksville is small enough that a short ride gets you to a trailhead. Check the BC Transit trip planner for the current routes serving Parksville and where they stop, since stops and numbers change. A local cab is simple for the last stretch, and the Parksville taxi page has the details. Cyclists can head toward Rathtrevor Beach Park and join the trail from the shore end.

Before you leave

Bring water and a map, stay on the marked paths, and keep clear of the canyon edge. If you plan to arrive late, check the gate time first and park at the lot nearest your finish point. Questions about closures or conditions can go to Regional District of Nanaimo parks services at 250-248-4744.
