The quickest way from Parksville to Qualicum Bay is to drive north on the Island Highway. Our own route data puts Parksville to Qualicum Beach at about 12 kilometres and 15 minutes by road, and Qualicum Bay lies a little further along the coast. Buses are listed for the area, but the timetable decides whether they fit your plans.
Driving north from Parksville
Qualicum Bay is served by the Island Highway, which runs up the coast, and the Island Rail Corridor passes through the same area. From Parksville, follow the highway toward Qualicum Beach and continue north. Watch for signs for Qualicum Bay and for the side roads that lead down to the shore, since no single exit name marks the way. Traffic is lightest outside the summer months. On sunny weekends in July and August, beach traffic builds, so leave a little extra time if you are heading to a booking or a ferry.
Parking near the shore
Parking rules differ from street to street, and some spaces near beach access points have time limits or are signed for residents. Read the signs where you park, and avoid blocking driveways. The Regional District of Nanaimo covers this area, so its website is the place for current parking and beach access notices.
Taking the bus
The Regional District of Nanaimo transit system, run by BC Transit, lists a Parksville route (route 88) and a Qualicum Beach route (route 98). Route details, stop locations and how often they run are on the BC Transit schedules page. Use the trip planner to enter Parksville and Qualicum Bay, pick your day, and see departures and any transfer. Do not assume that a bus continues all the way to Qualicum Bay. Arriving from Vancouver
From the mainland, the usual route is a BC Ferries sailing to Nanaimo, then north on Highway 19 to Parksville. Check the sailing schedule and book ahead on busy weekends. A cab can meet you at the terminal or in Parksville and carry on up the coast, which saves piecing together bus changes with luggage.
