How to get from Downtown Victoria to Esquimalt?

2 min read Updated

The simplest way to get from downtown Victoria to Esquimalt is a BC Transit bus. Routes 14 and 15 both link downtown with Esquimalt, and by road the trip is about 6 km and 15 minutes.

Where you end up in Esquimalt matters, since the township stretches from the Gorge waterway to the naval base, so check which stop is closest to your destination.

BC Transit routes to Esquimalt

Route 14 runs between Victoria General Hospital and the University of Victoria and passes through View Royal, Esquimalt, Victoria West and downtown. BC Transit lists it as a frequent route, with service every 15 minutes or better from 7 am to 7 pm on weekdays. Route 15 Esquimalt and UVic serves downtown, Esquimalt Road and the Esquimalt and Head stop near the HMC Dockyard, and it has extended late service on Fridays and Saturdays.

Other routes may also fit your start and end points. The BC Transit trip planner, or the BC Transit app, shows the right bus for an address and the next departure, along with live updates and alerts.

Cycling and walking

The ride is short and mostly flat, so cycling suits a dry day. Choose a route on quieter streets or the regional trail network, and check the Capital Regional District trail maps for current connections between Victoria West and Esquimalt. Walking from the centre of downtown takes much longer than the bus and suits people who want to see the waterfront on the way, so give it plenty of time.

Taxi and rideshare

A taxi helps when you have luggage, an appointment or a late finish after the buses slow down. Metered fares depend on distance and traffic, and the taxi fare estimator gives a rough fare. The Victoria taxi page covers local pickups, including Esquimalt and the West Shore. Rideshare apps also work in the area, and prices rise at busy times.

Rush hour slows the main roads toward the bridges, so allow extra time if you have a ferry, a flight or a shift to catch.
