Uber drivers do not see your tip while the ride is happening. They get it afterwards, once you have confirmed the amount in the app and it has been processed. In Vancouver, as elsewhere in Canada, the tip then appears in their earnings instead of arriving as a live notification during your trip.
Processing typically takes a few hours. Drivers see the total tip you gave only after that, and they cannot see what you intend to tip beforehand. The tip is added to their weekly payout and shows in their weekly summary or payout reports.
How tipping works in the Uber app
You can tip after the ride ends or add a tip during the booking process. The app lets you do this wherever you are in Canada. Because the driver is not told the amount at the moment you tip, the decision stays private, and nothing about it can affect how the trip goes.

- Use the built-in tipping feature in the Uber app right after the ride. Drivers cannot see the amount until it has been processed and recorded.
- Check your linked bank account or credit card in the app before the trip. Up-to-date payment details prevent delays with tip processing.
- Look at your digital receipt, in the app or by email, to confirm the tip was included correctly. The receipt shows the final tip amount.
- If you want extra discretion, you could pay the tip separately from the main fare where the app allows it.
- Do not talk about tips with the driver outside the app or on other messaging platforms. Keeping it inside Uber’s own transaction process keeps the tip confidential.
