How much should I tip on a $100 Uber?

2 min read Updated

On a $100 Uber, there is no required tip. Tipping is optional, and most riders choose an amount that matches how the trip went. Ten percent would be $10, fifteen percent $15 and twenty percent $20, so pick the point in that spread that feels right for the ride.

A tip is a thank-you for good service, and it is entirely your call. A driver who kept the car clean, took a sensible route and got you there without fuss deserves more than one who was late or drove poorly. Many riders also round the total up to a tidy number instead of working out a percentage.

Percentage or fixed amount

Working from a percentage is easy on a $100 fare, because the tip is just the percentage in dollars. Some riders prefer a flat amount instead, such as $10, $15 or $20. A smaller tip fits a quick, uneventful trip. A larger one suits a driver who went out of the way to help.

If you would rather skip the maths, choose a round figure that sits comfortably with you. An odd amount like $12 or $18 is fine. Nobody checks the percentage, and the driver sees the full amount you add.

Tipping through the app

After the trip, the Uber app asks you to rate the driver, and a tip option follows. Uber states that tips left through the app go to the driver in full. You can also add a tip later if you did not think of it at the time, for example when you read your emailed receipt.

Remember that the price shown before the ride is the total for the trip, including any surge, so the tip is a separate amount on top of that fare. A $100 fare is a long or busy trip, so check the breakdown if the figure looks higher than you expected.

What can push your tip higher

  • Late-night rides or trips in bad weather, when driving is harder.
  • Help with luggage, strollers or other bulky items.
  • A long wait or heavy traffic that made the job tougher.
  • A clean, comfortable car and a calm, courteous driver.

What can keep it lower

A late pickup, an unsafe moment or a driver who ignored your route request are all fair reasons to tip less. If something went seriously wrong, report it through the app instead of using the tip to make a point. For a normal, pleasant ride, a tip in the range described above works for most riders.
