How much to tip an Uber driver?

2 min read Updated

There is no required tip for an Uber driver in Vancouver. Most riders tip a modest amount that scales with the fare and the service, and the tip is added in the app after the ride.

Tipping is optional, and the amount is your call. A common way to think about it is to match the tip to how much effort the trip took: a quick, smooth ride deserves a small thank you, while a long trip with a lot of help deserves more. Because Uber does not publish a recommended percentage, treat any fixed figure you read online as a personal habit, not a rule.

How to decide on an amount

Fare size

On a short, cheap ride a round dollar amount is the easiest approach, since a percentage of a small fare can look tiny. On a longer or more expensive ride, pick a percentage of the fare that feels fair and round it up to a clean number.

Service on the trip

Raise the tip when the driver helps with luggage, waits patiently while you load a stroller, finds a way around a closure, or keeps the car clean and the ride calm. Lower it, or skip it, if the driver was late without explanation or drove badly. Your rating and your tip are two separate signals, so you can use both.

Conditions

Bad weather, heavy traffic and late night pickups all make the job harder. Riders often add a little extra when a driver has to deal with them, and again around holidays when drivers are working while others are off.

How to tip

The simplest route is the app. After the trip you can add a tip while you rate the ride, and the app keeps a record of it. Tips can also be added for a short time after the trip is finished, so you do not have to decide on the spot.

Some riders prefer to hand over cash. That is fine too, as long as you tell the driver it is a tip so it is not mistaken for a fare payment. If you are comparing the cost of a ride with a taxi, remember that the taxi meter does not include a tip either, so the same thinking applies to both. The Uber calculator can help you see the fare before you decide how much to add.
