The simplest way to reach Milner Gardens and Woodland from Qualicum Beach is by car or taxi. The gardens sit at 2179 Island Highway West, on the highway that runs through the Oceanside area, so a driver only needs the address in a maps app. Bus and walking routes exist, but they take more planning.
Driving to 2179 Island Highway West
Enter the street address rather than a general name, since the entrance is along the highway and not in the village core. The property has its own parking lot, with three accessible stalls beside the Welcome Centre. Visitors arriving from Parksville or Nanaimo drive north on the Island Highway and reach the gardens before the centre of Qualicum Beach.
The grounds are a long, gentle slope, with packed gravel and bark mulch paths in the woodland and some boardwalks that get slippery when wet. Sturdy shoes make the visit easier, and the gardens suggest allowing at least one hour.
Bus from the village
BC Transit runs local routes in Qualicum Beach, including route 98 around the western side of town and route 99 toward Deep Bay. Whether any of them stops close to the gardens, and on which days, is not something to guess. Open the BC Transit Nanaimo trip planner, enter the gardens address as your destination, and check the walking distance from the nearest stop. Look at the last return trip before you go, because service on these local routes does not run as often as in a city.
Walking from town
Walking from the village is possible along the highway, but the distance depends on where you start, and a live walking route in a maps app will give a better figure than a guess. Check the shoulder or sidewalk on the satellite view first. Most visitors save their legs for the paths inside the gardens.
Check the season before you go
Milner Gardens is a Vancouver Island University property and it keeps seasonal hours. Admission stops 30 minutes before closing, and public guided tours run on Thursdays and Fridays from April to September in the early afternoon. Pets are not allowed, apart from certified guide dogs.
