How to get from Ladysmith to Transfer Beach Park?

2 min read Updated

Transfer Beach Park is in Ladysmith, just off the Trans Canada Highway and a short walk from downtown, so a car or a taxi gets you there fastest. Buses run through the Cowichan and Nanaimo area, but the trip planner has the current routes.

By car off the Trans Canada Highway

The park has direct access from the highway, which makes it simple to find. Follow the highway signs for Ladysmith and then the local signs for Transfer Beach. If you are coming from the Nanaimo side, the park is about 8 minutes south of Nanaimo Airport. A car suits a beach day, with room for coolers, towels and a picnic.

The park is large and busy in summer. It has a spray park, a playground, a sheltered picnic area, a beach volleyball court, an off leash dog park, public washrooms, a food truck concession and an amphitheatre. Weekend afternoons in July and August bring crowds, so arrive earlier in the day if you want an easy time with parking.

Using BC Transit

BC Transit serves Ladysmith, and service between Ladysmith, Duncan and Nanaimo has changed over the past few years. Route numbers and times are updated each season, so open the BC Transit trip planner, enter your starting point and Transfer Beach Park, and let it show the current options. Look at the return times before you leave, since service is lighter on weekends and in the off season.

Because the park is close to the town centre, the last stretch from the nearest stop is a short walk in most cases.

Taxi or rideshare to the beach

A taxi is the direct choice for families with beach gear or for anyone who would rather skip the bus transfers. Tell the driver Transfer Beach Park and you will be dropped near the park. You can work out a likely cost first with the taxi fare estimator. If your trip starts in Nanaimo, the Nanaimo taxi page lists local operators.

Walking or cycling from town

Anyone staying in Ladysmith can walk down to the park. In dry weather the walk makes a nice start to the day, and bikes are an easy way to get there if you are carrying only a small bag.

Coming over from the mainland

From Vancouver, the usual route is a BC Ferries sailing to the Nanaimo area and then a drive or ride south. Check the BC Ferries sailing schedule, since summer weekend sailings can fill.
