BC Ferries runs the Crofton to Salt Spring Island crossing, and it lands at Vesuvius Bay on the island. The sailing takes about 20 minutes and there are around 14 round trips a day, though times change by season, so check the current schedule before you go.
Crofton terminal and the crossing
Crofton is on Vancouver Island, north of Duncan, and the route is one of the short hops over to Salt Spring. BC Ferries lists the distance as 2.8 nautical miles. That short crossing is why the boat feels like a quick bridge, not a voyage.
Ticket sales and loading close 3 minutes before sailing for vehicles and 5 minutes before for foot passengers, so do not cut it close. Lineups at Crofton can be long on busy days, and the local press has reported on them more than once. On summer weekends and holidays, arrive well ahead and check BC Ferries travel advisories and the schedule for your date.
Getting around after you land at Vesuvius Bay
The arrival point is on the north end of Salt Spring, and Ganges, the island’s main village, is a drive away. If you have no car, work out your ride before you board. Taxis exist on the island, but demand rises in summer, so book ahead where you can and confirm the fare before setting off with luggage. Renting a car or scooter is another way to reach beaches and trails, but supply is limited and peak season fills up. Reserve early if that is your plan.
