Do you tip cab drivers in Vancouver?

2 min read Updated

Yes, tipping cab drivers in Vancouver is customary. The usual amount is 10 to 15 percent of the fare, and it is not mandatory.

Vancouver follows the same custom as the rest of Canada. A tip is not built into the metered fare, so it is a separate thank-you for the ride and the service that came with it.

How much to tip a Vancouver cab driver

Ten to fifteen percent is the range most Canadian guides give for taxis and rideshares. Go toward the higher end if the driver was courteous, helped with luggage, handled bad weather well or gave useful local advice. For a short trip or ordinary service, the lower end is fine.

Tip examples

The math is simple at the two ends of the range:

  • On a $20 fare, 10 to 15 percent is $2 to $3.
  • On a $40 fare, it is $4 to $6.
  • On a $60 fare, it is $6 to $9.

If the maths feels like a chore, rounding the fare up to the next convenient number works too. On a low fare, adding a couple of dollars is still a polite gesture.

Paying the tip

Most taxis accept card payment, and the terminal usually offers tip options before you confirm the total. If you pay cash, hand the tip over in cash so it goes straight to the driver. If you are unsure how the card tip works, ask the driver before you pay so the exchange is clear.

If your fare was discounted, base the tip on the full fare, since the service you received was the same.

When a bigger tip makes sense

Airport transfers with heavy bags, late-night rides and trips in rain or snow all call for the upper end of the range. A driver who waits while you load luggage or helps someone with limited mobility has earned a little more. If the ride was brief and unremarkable, a standard tip is enough.

Not sure what the fare will be before you set off? The taxi fare estimator gives a rough figure you can use to plan the tip.
