North Island College has a campus in Port Alberni itself, so there is no long highway trip from downtown Port Alberni. The college lists four campuses: Port Alberni, Parksville, Campbell River and the Comox Valley. If your class or appointment is at the Port Alberni campus, you are travelling across town.
Check you have the right campus
It is easy to mix up the campuses, especially if a course email only says North Island College. Look at your timetable or confirmation for the campus name before you set off. If it says Parksville, Campbell River or Comox Valley, you are heading to a different town and the trip becomes a proper drive or a taxi ride between communities. Getting across Port Alberni
For a short local trip, a taxi is the simplest option, particularly with luggage, tools or a group. The Port Alberni taxi page has the local options. If you prefer to drive, put the campus address into a navigation app and it will give you the current route and travel time.
Bus service in the Alberni Valley is run by BC Transit. Use the BC Transit trip planner for the Alberni Clayoquot area, enter your start point and the campus, and check the times for the day you plan to travel. Smaller communities often have fewer trips than a big city, so look at the last bus home as well as the first one out.
Trips to other NIC campuses
If you need to reach the Parksville campus from Port Alberni, you are travelling between towns on the island. A car is the most direct choice. Without one, ask BC Transit and the intercity carriers whether any connection fits your timetable, or book a taxi in advance for the longer ride. Winter weather can slow the highway between the Alberni Valley and the east coast of the island, so check conditions on the day if your trip crosses it.
