How far will an Uber driver take you?

2 min read Updated

Uber has no single distance limit that applies everywhere, and figures vary. Around Vancouver, trips of roughly 50 to 70 kilometres are treated as routine, for example from downtown to Burnaby or New Westminster. Longer rides can need extra approval or cost more, so check the app before booking.

Limits depend on local regulations and on whether drivers are available. Remote areas, and trips that cross provincial borders, are the most likely to bring restrictions or higher fares. Where a trip goes beyond what Uber supports, plan another way to travel.

Distance limits on long trips

For long rides in BC, one figure puts Uber’s general maximum at about 300 miles (roughly 500 kilometres), though it depends on location and current policy. Regional regulations can also limit the distance of a single trip. The reasons given are driver safety, vehicle upkeep and keeping trips worthwhile for drivers.

For a trip longer than about 200 miles (around 320 kilometres), Uber may split the journey into segments or suggest alternatives. Consider breaking the trip into sections or comparing Uber with long-distance bus or train options. Confirm current limits in the app or with Uber support before you schedule a long ride.

Route changes, stops and surge pricing on long rides

Uber allows route changes only when they serve the passenger or are needed for safety. Tell your driver about any change through the app so there is no fare dispute later. If you ask for a stop or detour, the driver can accept it if it does not change the original path much. Multiple stops are allowed in BC, but large deviations can lead to fare adjustments that show up like surge pricing. Check the app before you confirm any change to see what it will cost.

Surge pricing follows real-time demand and can climb during long trips, particularly in busy places such as Vancouver or during local events. Surge multipliers of two to three times the normal fare are possible.

To keep costs predictable, set your pickup and destination clearly and stay with them unless you must change. If a route change or surge price worries you, contact Uber support through the app.
