Why can’t I pay Uber with cash?

2 min read Updated

You cannot pay Uber with cash in Vancouver because the service has moved to digital payment. You link a credit card, debit card or another electronic method to your account before you ride. The same is true in most Canadian cities.

Why Uber does not take cash

Uber says cashless payment is safer and more efficient. It cuts the risks of handling cash, such as theft and fare disputes, and it keeps fare distribution under tighter control. The company also puts weight on contactless payment, which grew after health and safety concerns rose.

Digital payment also fits how Uber works. The fare is calculated automatically, a receipt is generated and the trip is tracked in real time, which keeps pricing transparent. In Vancouver, where rides are frequent and often short, that makes each trip more predictable for riders and drivers.

Accepted payment methods

In BC, Uber requires a cashless method. You can use a credit or debit card linked to your account, and your selected method is charged automatically when the trip ends. Keep your payment information up to date in the app.

Digital wallets

If you prefer not to use a credit card, add a debit card or link a digital wallet such as Apple Pay or Google Pay where available. Both give contactless payment.

Gift cards and prepaid cards

Rules on prepaid and gift cards are not consistent across sources. Some say prepaid cards, gift cards and cash are not accepted in Canada, and others say gift cards or digital payment methods can be added in the app. Check which options your app shows before you rely on them.

If you do not have a bank card

Riders who prefer cash can use third-party providers or prepaid cards that accept cash deposits, which keeps the money in digital form for Uber. Some outlets or partner stores in Vancouver may also take cash and credit it to your Uber account. Look at Uber’s website or the local support pages for a list of authorized vendors, and check that the service is available in Vancouver.

The drawbacks of cash routes are slower processing, finding an outlet and carrying cash. Mobile banking apps, digital wallets or prepaid cards avoid those. Before you request a ride, confirm in the app that your payment method is valid and funded.
