Victoria is the best part of Vancouver Island for a first visit, with the Inner Harbour, the Royal BC Museum and Butchart Gardens. If you want wild coast and outdoor activity, head to Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and Tofino. Which is best for you depends on wanting a city or a coastline.
Inner Harbour, Sidney and the Cowichan Valley
Victoria has historic architecture, lively markets and the Inner Harbour. The Royal BC Museum and Butchart Gardens are the standard stops. Along the Inner Harbour you can walk past historic buildings and waterfront cafes, and try local dishes such as wild salmon and oyster chowder.
Sidney is a seaside town with flat walks along the Sidney Pier and Sidney Spit and wide views of the coastline. Its cafes serve seafood platters made with local catch.
The Cowichan Valley is the quieter choice, with peaceful beaches and forests. Small towns such as Chemainus and Ladysmith have murals, galleries and cafes that show the island’s community spirit.
Chesterman Beach and the Broken Group Islands
Tofino is known for its rugged beauty. You can walk through rainforest and along beaches such as Chesterman Beach, then eat West Coast seafood such as Dungeness crab and Pacific salmon at beachfront restaurants.
Pacific Rim National Park Reserve has rugged coastline and dense rainforest, with surfing, whale-watching tours and challenging coastal hikes. You can kayak the Broken Group Islands through secluded coves and watch for marine life.
Mountain and ridge hikes
Strathcona Provincial Park has mountain trails, including the Golden Hinde route, which climbs to over 2,100 metres. Its lakes suit backcountry camping and swimming. Gowlland Tod Provincial Park has steep ridge walks with views over Victoria and the sea, through dense forest and open lookouts.
Check current trail conditions and any park notices before a hike, especially for the longer routes in Strathcona.
Choosing a base
Victoria suits a short trip without a car, since the main sights are close to the harbour. For the Cowichan Valley, see the Cowichan taxi page, and for the south end the Victoria taxi page. A taxi or rideshare covers the last stretch to a trailhead or garden when the bus does not, and the Uber estimate calculator gives a rough fare to compare.
