Pre-booking an Uber does not automatically make it cheaper, but it does lock in the price. With Uber Reserve you see the exact fare when you book, so a surge at pickup time cannot raise it afterward. Whether that fare is lower than an on-demand ride depends on how busy the network is when you would otherwise request.
How Uber Reserve works in Canada
Uber rolled out Reserve for UberX and UberXL in select Canadian cities, with Vancouver among them at launch. You can schedule a ride anywhere from 30 minutes to 90 days ahead. The app presents an exact fare at the time of booking, and drivers are matched to the trip in advance so pickups are meant to be punctual.
Cancellation is free up to an hour before the scheduled pickup. Within the final 60 minutes a fee applies. Reserved rides also include a built-in extra wait period at pickup, which helps when you are loading luggage.
When booking ahead helps
The value is greatest when you would otherwise request during a busy period, such as a weekday rush, a rainy evening or the hour after a big event. A fixed fare removes the risk of a surge price at that moment. It also helps for early flights, where a ride that does not show up costs far more than any fare difference.
At quiet times, such as mid morning, an on-demand ride is usually priced normally and a reservation offers little saving. The two prices can be close, so compare them when both are available.
Check the estimate first
Open the app, enter the pickup time and destination, and compare the reserved fare with the on-demand estimate for the same route. The Uber fare calculator can give a rough baseline for the distance. Airport transfers and routine commutes are the trips where a locked price is most useful.
Promotions and practical points
Uber has run limited promotions on reserved rides. When Reserve expanded in Canada in 2023, one offer gave 30 percent off, up to $30, in parts of Montreal, Vancouver and Ottawa until September 19, 2023. That offer has ended, and any current promotion shows in the app.
Reserve is not offered in every city or at every hour, so confirm that the option appears for your pickup location. If it does not, a regular request is the fallback, and checking the estimate a few minutes later can show whether a surge has eased.
