How many days do you need to visit Vancouver Island?

2 min read Updated

You need at least four to five days to see the main sights of Vancouver Island, and five to seven days to see them without rushing. You could see the highlights in less, but a week gives a fuller trip.

Split your time among the main attractions

Start from Vancouver by taking the ferry across the Strait of Georgia early in the day, so you have more time for sightseeing once you arrive. Spend a day getting settled in Victoria, the provincial capital, then two to three days on its highlights. These include Butchart Gardens, the Royal BC Museum, the Inner Harbour, whale-watching tours and historic sites.

Give one day to Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, with Long Beach and ancient rainforests, and another for the scenic drive from Victoria to Tofino with coastal views along the way. In Tofino you can try surfing, hot springs and whale-watching tours.

Hidden gems

Use spare hours for quieter places, such as the Blowhole at Artist’s Point near Sooke or the local markets in Qualicum Beach. A boat trip reaches wild coastline and coves that you can only see from the water. Ucluelet is a small fishing village with rugged scenery and local art. Less-travelled trails such as those in the Sooke Hills give a quiet escape from the busier tourist areas.

Building a realistic itinerary

A balanced plan mixes outdoor activity with culture. Spend two days in Victoria at the Royal BC Museum, Butchart Gardens and the Inner Harbour, where you will see something of BC’s history and arts.

On the third day, try kayaking around Victoria’s coastline or a whale-watching tour, which run from late spring to early fall. Then drive north to Tofino for a day of surf beaches and rainforest trails.

Reserve a full day for Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, with hikes on the rugged shoreline or a guided eco-tour. For culture, add the Tofino Botanical Gardens or local museums that cover Indigenous history.

If you have time, add Nanaimo for its art galleries, or Mount Benson for a moderate hike with panoramic views. That schedule covers forest, coast and cultural sites.
